Breakthrough Stanford Study Reveals What Hypnotists Have Long Known – Hypnotic Trance Changes Brain Patterns & Activity

Breakthrough Research: Brain Activity and Hypnotic Trance
 It’s the 21st century.

Every other day, there’s news of some fascinating discovery…

Brain implants to reverse paralysis.

Vehicles that can drive themselves.

Facial recognition software for ID confirmation.

It seems like you can’t open a newspaper or browse a news channel without hearing of yet another remarkable breakthrough.

Which is why we were excited about this hypnosis discovery making it into the limelight…

You see, it’s no secret that academics have studied hypnosis and trance phenomena for more than a century.

But despite their best efforts, they were unable figure out what trance was. Was it a state? Was it a trait? Was it a genetic predisposition?

No matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t find an answer. Even with fMRI scanners that measure brain activity.

In fact, scientists concluded that there was no detectable pattern in the brain when someone was in a hypnotic trance.

That was until new research carried out by a team working under the legendary Dr. David Spiegel at the Stanford University School of Medicine got to work to set the record straight.

They published the results of their study in the journal Cerebral Cortex – causing quite the buzz in the hypnosis world because they confirmed what hypnotists have long suspected…

But before we reveal the details of this breakthrough study, let’s take a quick look at Spiegel’s background.

The Son Of A Clinical Hypnosis Expert

David Spiegel, M.D., is professor and associate chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University.

He’s one of America’s most respected experts in the clinical uses of hypnosis and is the son of the late Herbert Spiegel, M.D., who was also an expert in hypnosis.
Spiegel’s research has frequently focused on two elements: cancer and hypnosis. Back in 1983 he did a study looking at in breast cancer patients using hypnosis.

He found that self-hypnosis exercises as part of a group therapy experience had: “A direct effect in altering the patient’s perception of pain.”

His associations with hypnosis go back even further than that. In 1972, Spiegel underwent shoulder surgery. Following the 3-hour operation, he refused any painkilling medication.

Instead, Spiegel used self-hypnosis to control the pain. Given that he had an incision running from the top to bottom of his shoulder, it’s a safe bet that the pain was considerable.

In addition to his work with cancer, Spiegel has studied how hypnosis can be used in other applications.

These include:

Dr.Spiegel hypnosis research findings

Dr. Spiegel’s links with hypnosis and his credibility are beyond question. However, just like everybody else working in the field, there was still something major he wanted to prove…

He knew what hypnosis was capable of doing, but there was something else he wanted to uncover.

Since hypnosis was a change of state, there must also be some type of change in the brain. And there must be a way of seeing this change too.

In 2016, Spiegel and a team of researchers decided to prove their suspicions.

Spiegel’s Study: Brain Activity And Functional Connectivity Associated With Hypnosis

The purpose of the study was to try to identify changes in brain activity during the hypnotic state.

Through this study, Spiegel and his colleagues discovered that some parts of the brain function differently under hypnosis than during normal consciousness.
They also identified brain areas altered during hypnotic trances.

These findings might help explain the intense absorption, lack of self-consciousness and suggestibility that characterize the hypnotic state.

Interview With A Hypnotist: Dr. Ed Tori’s 6 Keys To Greater Influence & How To Inspire Healthy Behavior

Interview With A Hypnotist: Dr. Ed Tori’s 6 Keys To Greater Influence & How To Inspire Healthy Behavior

With great influence comes great responsibility.

And when it comes to influence in hypnosis, two of the most important rapport building tools are conversational hypnosis and hypnotic language patterns.

They allow you, as the hypnotist, to quickly gain your subject’s trust so you’re able to help them overcome any issues and lead more positive lives.

Therefore, given the power of conversational hypnosis and influence, it’s understandable why this month’s master hypnotist - Dr. Ed Tori – was curious to see how these hypnosis tools could be used in a medical setting.

This curiosity, in addition to his strong belief in hypnosis, are the reasons he founded the Influence Center, a facility within his healthcare institution designed to help medical professionals harness the power of conversational hypnosis, influence and persuasion so they can help patients and colleagues.

In this month’s engaging interview with Igor Ledochowski, Dr. Tori shares this journey and reveals the 6 essential rules for anyone who wants to be more influential, in addition to why rapport is a secret tool for increasing healthy behaviors.

He also explains how to make your time more constructive with mind mapping and the secret to keeping your energy levels up so you can pick up new skills no matter how busy you are.

Hypnosis: Who Is Susceptible? How To Quickly Spot Highly-Hypnotizable People & The 5 Most Common Reasons Hypnosis Fails

Hypnosis: Who Is Susceptible? How To Quickly Spot Highly-Hypnotizable People & The 5 Most Common Reasons Hypnosis Fails

"You do something to me
Something that simply mystifies me
Tell me, why should it be
You have the power to hypnotize me?"

When Cole Porter wrote those lyrics, he probably wasn’t thinking about hypnosis in the therapeutic sense of the word.
And yet it throws up an interesting question:

How many people can – or how many people can’t – be hypnotized?

David Spiegel MD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University has been quoted as estimating that about 25% of people cannot be hypnotized.

So while the exact number can’t truly be known, various percentages are frequently bandied about.

To test this hypothesis out, Spiegel and his team used MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans to try and figure out why some people were more susceptible than others.

They discovered that people who were more likely to be hypnotized show more activity in areas of the brain concerned with executive control and attention.

Hypnosis susceptible brain scan

People who are easily hypnotized tend to lose track of time and get lost in a book or movie.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Dr. Spiegel said that highly hypnotizable people:

"Can readily immerse themselves in thinking about things without having their attention interrupted by pesky reminders of reality."

It’s thought that roughly between 5-10% of people are highly susceptible to hypnotic suggestion, while up to 79% of the population are considered moderately susceptible.

Okay, so what do those numbers tell you?

They tell you that you’ve got a good chance of hypnotizing most of the people you meet.

That’s fantastic news, right?

But what they don’t tell you, though, is who those people are and how to spot them.

That’s where street hypnotists may have the upper hand. To weave their magic, they have to act fast.

They might only have seconds to make an impression. They need to be able to spot who’ll make a good subject and who won’t before the person walks on by or loses interest.

So you might be wondering, how do they do this... Keep Reading

This is especially true when working in a controlled environment, such as your hypnosis practice, where you’re working one-on-one and they have specifically come to you for hypnosis.

But what if you’re not in a clinical environment?

How can you effectively use hypnosis - or teach stressed-out execs to ethically use it in highly stressful corporate situations when working with multiple people and trying to influence change where it matters the most... right at the top?

[FREE EBOOK & MP3 AUDIOBOOK] The 7 Most Common Barriers To Building Rapport & The 5-Step Conversation Formula – PLUS: Igor Ledochowski’s Instant Rapport Technique – 2nd Edition

The 7 Most Common Barriers To Building Rapport

Has this ever happened to you?

You meet someone, and after just a few moments… you click. And not just in your usual run of the mill, "I grew up in the same town and like Cornflakes, too" kinda way, either.

It runs much deeper than that. You could talk for hours on end and never get bored. Sharing your thoughts and ideas seems easy and natural. And although you’ve just met this person, you feel an instant bond.

Deep down you know this is the beginning of a long and mutually rewarding friendship.

Why?

You experienced instant rapport. You see yourself mirrored in the other person. You communicate effortlessly and want to spend as much time as possible in each other’s company.

But then, there’s the other side of the coin. Sometimes you meet people and, despite your best efforts, you can’t find any common ground.

The things you enjoy, they don’t. It’s a struggle to make conversation on any level. You feel embarrassed, wishing there was some way you could break through the barrier that’s keeping you from getting to know them.

There is. It’s called Building Rapport.

And not only is rapport building invaluable when it comes to effective communication – your ability to build it will either make or break your hypnosis practice.

Here’s why:

The absence of rapport is telling your subject’s mind that you’re a person that they can’t trust yet.

The problem with this is - without trust, there’s no way to push forward.

Meaning as a hypnotist, it’s your job to make your subject feel safe so you can quickly get down to doing what you do best: using hypnosis to improve their life.

Because when someone feels that their physical safety, social status and their ideas aren’t at risk... then you have most of the ingredients for rapport to flow like a river.

Interested to find out how you can open up these floodgates so rapport flows effortlessly and becomes second nature when you’re working with a subject?

If your response to this question has left you all bright eyed and bushy tailed, then you’re in for a treat.

As we’re about to share our top rapport building secrets to help you further boost your conversational hypnosis practice.

The Hypnotist's Guide To Trance: What It Is, How You Can Induce It and 7 Signs That Show You It's Happening

The Hypnotist's Guide To Trance: What It Is, How You Can Induce It and 7 Signs That Show You It’s Happening

Many have wondered...

Is it some kind of mystical state of mind?

Is it a powerful force that puts you under a freaky spell where you have no control over your actions?

Is it a mysterious energy that elevates your brain to a higher plane of existence?

While the concept of hypnotic trance certainly conjures up a lot of intrigue and curiosity, the truth is a lot simpler.

In fact, significantly so.

"Trance" really is just a metaphor.

Yep, really.

We hope that this discovery didn’t just blow the air out of your tires in the same way that Dorothy’s first meeting with the Wizard of Oz did.

So let us explain...

Hypnotic "trance" is just a word that we use to identify the conditions under which someone responds to hypnotic suggestions.

We understand that this might read as a bit of a surprise to you. But the proof really is in the pudding. Academics have been studying trance for over a century now, trying to pinpoint exactly what it is.

Is it a state? Is it a trait? Is it a genetic predisposition?

But no matter how hard they look, they can’t find an answer.

They’ve even used fMRI scans that measure brain activity. But they found there was no detectable pattern in the brain when someone was in a trance.

what is trance brain scan

However, thankfully there’s a very good reason they came to this simple, yet obvious conclusion:

We’re in the trance state so often that it doesn’t show up in the brain as anything unusual. It’s an experience that occurs in everyone on a regular basis.

And to further compound this discovery, here is another little known fact:

You don’t need to be in a trance for hypnosis to occur. Hypnosis and trance are not synonymous.

Or otherwise put: being in a trance is not proof that any hypnotic experience is taking place.

However, what does go together like two peas in a pod is hypnosis and suggestion.

If you give someone a suggestion and they act on it, then it’s your gold litmus test that hypnosis is indeed working, meaning that hypnosis and suggestion are completely synonymous with one another.

After reading the above, understandably, you might be wondering, what’s the point of trance then?

So, let us explain...

Trance serves as a type of shorthand to let you know that the conditions in which someone responds to hypnotic suggestions are right.

Therefore, being able to identify a trance or the signs of trance can help you know when a hypnotic relationship has been established.

It gives you a green light to proceed with whatever hypnosis work you intend on doing.

That it’s an optimal time to cue up your suggestions.

Meaning that trance plays an incredibly important role in the whole hypnosis process.

In this article, we’re going to explain what this role is, in addition to explaining the following essential concepts so you’re able to confidently put your subjects into a trance...

So let’s jump in and get started...
